Rubber Extrusion Is Used In Many Industries And Applications

By Estelle Larsen

When referring to an extrusion, the industries that use or make these imagine something that is formed from a quantity of material into a regularly shaped item in a long form. This is best described as the Play Do machines you had as a child. The do is placed in the forming machine and squeezed out of different shaped dies. Aluminum is done this way as is sausage when it is being formed. A rubber extrusion is the same process except they are much more flexible.

What the technicians put into the machine is the raw rubber with various compounds mixed in. This machine will melt the rubber and prepare it for the forming it must go through. It will then be directed to a barrel ending at the forming die. This die is the most important part of the piece of equipment.

Dies are made from very strong steel and designed to very exacting standards. They can create a number of different forms. Some of those will be a variation of a flat bar. Round holes are fairly common and many will have a device that allows them to form a hollow tube.

Many of the reasons for these types of rubber products are for seals of many kinds. One of those categories is for the space programs and airplanes. These craft undergo a lot of stress and they need flexible, yet strong and resilient seals. Without this form of creating a seamless seal, splicing pieces together would not be as good.

Medications often are administered through rubber tubing. These items must be as strong as possible because they should not break no matter what is in them. Some of these sanitary tubes are embedded in a living body because of the breakdown of a vein or an artery. They must be strong in order to last long enough for recovery to occur.

Food production processes employ a large number of sanitary tubes for the movement of ingredients and additives. These tubes must be strong and able to be moved around and even run over with material handling gear and spring back into shape. The nature of rubber allows for this and the cleanable tubes make everything faster and easier.

One of the very good things about an extruded rubber product is the fact that there are no seams and no splices. Splices and seams fail and then the voids that are present can damage the surfaces and everything is in danger. A personal item that can be examined for this is the refrigerator or freezer. Manufacturing things by using an extruded item is the smart way to preserve the integrity that is the basis for any safe operating system.

Seals in aerospace applications and safety for food being processed are benefited by these types of rubber items. Safety of your prescription drugs, maintaining the temperature of items placed in a refrigerator or freezer is also very important. The many forms that can be designed and brought out of a batch of rubber are what make the modern world the safe and secure place it is.
