The most common method of treatment is called individual counselling. This is whereby the affected person is taken to a therapist by his or her family members. The therapist is responsible for giving the addict to the necessary steps he or she must take to regain control of his or her life. Apart from advice on drug use, the addict is shown how to engage in helpful activities that will keep him or her from engaging in drug use. The therapist carries out a follow-up to ensure that the patient is on track again. Recommendations are made if the counselor deems it necessary.

Group counseling is another method of treating substance abuse. Most centers use this method to encourage social support among the addicts present. They share their experiences about how they started and what they underwent prior to looking for help. These discussions help to encourage a lifestyle that without drugs. It is a community friendly method that brings togetherness among peers. The addicts are there to support each other.

Another method that is commonly used is called the outpatient treatment. It is an effective method that is less costly. It is suitable for people who have busy schedules on their program. It also works for those whose level of abuse is not as dire. It is mostly voluntary for people who have want to quit a bad habit like smoking. Depending on the dedication a patient gives to the cause, it can be very effective. There also programs of this kind that deal with mental disorders as well.

The short-term residential program is based on the twelve step approach. It was designed to dwell on alcohol-related issues but later it was used to treat other types of substance use like cocaine. A patient stays in the hospital for three to six weeks and it is necessary to make regular follow ups once you leave the facility. Aftercare programs are important to avoid relapse.

Addicts who are fatal are advised to take up the long-term program that provides care for a whole day. The therapist does not leave the side of the patient at all until he or she recovers. It takes six months to a whole year to enable the patient to regain control of his or her life. The therapist helps the individual turn to a new leaf and acquire good behaviors.

A combination of jailing and drug treatment has also been found to be an effective way of treating an abuser. Under close supervision of legal officers helps abuser to follow treatment procedures better than those under no pressure. This leads to better outcomes whereby the patient will stay in check after release and stay away from any illegal activities.

Medication can also be given to those who are ailing as a result of excessive drug use. This helps to deal with the cravings that come constantly. Allocation of medicine is also given to reduce side effects that could kill a person who has been an addict for too long.
