DBT In NYC And The Surrounding Area

By Roger Stewart

A new treatment originated by a doctor to help people who are suicidal and whom struggle with attraction to harming oneself is now available. The therapy known as DBT in NYC and other locales is beneficial for individuals who have a hard time dealing and managing with emotional issues. As the process focuses on the validity of life's struggles and difficulties and how to change perception, it is considered a unique and practical form of psychotherapy.

In this form of psychotherapy, a therapist goes beyond the symptomatic cause of mental illness and teaches clients in New York and other areas how to create a better life. While many clients have either attempted suicide, cutting or some other self-inflicted harm, this does not mean that all people with the condition do so. In addition, individuals not suffering from mental illness who suffer minor issues with depression can also benefit from this type therapy.

While having taken years of research and development, the process is now considered a support treatment for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD.) The main cause of BPD being a chemical imbalance in the brain which causes anxiety and depression. Whereas, those without mental illness can still have these issues with the only difference being internal versus external forces. As such, the therapy has proven helpful for those with and without the disorder.

The therapy can also be used to treat others whom do not suffer from mental illness. As such, while mental illness has always been the prime focus of the application, those with eating disorders, addiction or substance abuse may also find the process beneficial. As the process focuses on teaching individuals and families that life is worth living, many lives have been saved in the process.

Using a combination of behavioral therapies, the therapy integrates cognition, meditation and mindfulness. For, as many with BPD and other mental issues know, it can often be hard to live in the moment. As such, these two combinations often help to create a sense of calm among a sea of anxiety, depression and distraction in most cases.

Before teaching clients how to modify behavior using this method and other applications, it is imperative that providers complete the required training. The training to become a provider in this therapeutic form include completing four modules of training. These are mindfulness, regulation of emotions, distress tolerance and how to manage crisis in personal relationships. After which, the provider can then begin teaching others how to use these methods to create a better and more fulfilling life.

For those looking to provide this service, therapists must participate in a group training which last approximately four months. There are 4 different adult groups and one youth group session available. The training is on an ongoing basis with new recruits starting at the beginning of each new module. Generally, one can start training within 4 to 5 weeks after registration for one of the four modules. In addition, there are also multi-use modules which allow an individual to learn how to work with families.

To obtain a certificate and be able to serve clients, an individual must complete these 4 levels of training. The training includes modules in mindfulness, emotions and response, distress tolerance and how better to manage a crisis. For example, the latter applies to learning how to better deal with interpersonal relationships when two or more individuals disagree. Once an individual has completed these four modules then one can begin serving clients.
