Geotechnical surveying is an application below civil surveying wherein it focuses in the ground material behaviors. Despite its relevance, a discipline focused on creating structures inside the earth or on the surface including petroleum, military, and mining still applies them. The stone and soil mechanics is one of the principles used in checking subsurface conditions and materials.

The principles are also used to monitor foundation and earthwork construction, monitor site conditions, design foundations, evaluate risks and balance of artificial and natural slopes, and determine the significant chemical, mechanical, and physical properties of materials. A common geotech engineering plan starts with the evaluation of their needs to establish the properties. The establishment is followed by the area inspection bedrock properties, fault distribution, rock, and soil above and below their area.

The examination is used to determine the properties that include technique of facing with, in, or on proposal. They also need to acquire the understanding of project sites. The examinations are incorporated with the assessment of risks faced by individuals, environment, and property that includes earthquakes, stone falls, landslides, and ground liquefaction.

The engineer is assigned to construct and determine the layouts of foundations, pavement subgrades, and earthworks for the creation of artificial establishments. The schemes for every foundation are designed and constructed with different diameters that include high rise infrastructures, smaller buildings, bridges, and medium to large commercial areas. The foundation created for structures above the ground integrate deep or shallow groundwork.

A retaining structure refers to a retaining wall, whereas, an earthwork refers to dikes and levees, embankments, reservoirs, deposition of harmful wastes and sanitary landfills, and tunnels. This specialization has also exhibited their resemblance to coastal and ocean engineering. Coastal surveying concentrates on the creation and schemes of a marina, wharf, and jetty. Ocean engineering concentrates on the foundation systems and anchors of an offshore infrastructure.

The applications of engineering geology and geotechnical surveying are closely similar, but there are areas where they still overlap each other. Their application is focused on engineering, whereas, engineering geology falls under geology. The field of geotechnical surveying can also refer to the method of constructing structure out, in, or rock and ground.

An engineer is primarily tasked to evaluate the stone and soil properties of their site, understand the differences of rock and earth properties, and determine building techniques. This professional is also asked to strengthen caves, excavations, and tunnels, analyze behaviors of an embankment, and conduct a response analysis. The primary components linked to specialty are earth and foundations.

The ground mechanic is part of its primary areas wherein soil is analyzed prior to the start of their project to insure their capability to hold the weight of the establishments. An engineer understanding of their properties based on factors that include the form and size of stone or mineral particles, volume of minerals, water, and air, and the distribution of grains is required. The evaluation of the foundation to check their capability of holding the weight of the building is advisable.

Geotechnical surveying has already emerged as an excellent resolution to civil surveying issues. Buildings constructed above unstable soils require the advanced form of this specialty. Certainly, climate change augmented to the demand for these professionals because of added instances of landslides, rock falls, and flooding.
