Model Rockets With Propellant Depots

By Debra Cooper

These days you do not have to be a rocket engineer to launch a rocket. There are model rockets that do not require any specialized expertise to launch them. This has made rocketing to become a popular hobby among kids and even some adults. However, you need to make sure that you find a good kit of your model rocket. Also, you are not supposed to interfere with the propellant depots in the engine.

The casing of these model rockets is made of cardboard. Cardboards are used because they are very affordable and strong. They are also very light. These three characteristics makes cardboard a perfect material to make the tubular casing. However, you can still find model rockets that are made of plastic materials. They are good as their counterparts made of cardboards so you can choose any.

At the end of the rocket engine, there is a nozzle. A nozzle is a small opening that is used to let the hot air out after the engine has been ignited. The nozzle is supposed to create more pressure so that the pressure created can create a thrust that will lift the rocket from the ground. The material used to make the nozzle should be able to survive the high temperatures.

The rocket engine is powered by chemicals that are mixed to make flammable propellants. These propellants can be said to be the rocket fuel. They are ignited by an electric charge just like the gasoline in cars. Small rocket engines use propellants made of charcoal, Sulphur and potassium nitrate while bigger engines are powered by propellant made from aluminum powder, rubber and ammonium perchlorate.

When you go to buy model rockets, you will notice that there are some that are fully assembled while others are not or are partially assemble. The manufacturers develop this kits that way so that there is a kit for everyone. Those who like building their rockets from scratch can buy a kit that is not assemble while those who lack assembling skills can buy a fully assembled model rocket.

There are two things that you need to know about spraying your rocket. You need to do it perfectly if you want have an even paint all-round the model and you need to paint a bright color instead of a dark one. Dark colors have a camouflaging characteristic that makes it difficult to find your rocket in the field. Also, you need to do the paint the model in an open space.

Launching a model rocket is a process but it is not complicated as the assembling part. To launch, you need to mount the igniter on the rocket engine, place the engine in the rocket shell and station it on the launching pad. Before this, you need to first identify a safe field to launch your rocket. The field should not have dry grass because the grass is easily ignited.

If you are launching in a place that is far from your residence, consider carrying the whole kit in case something breaks down you will have its spare part. Also, ensure that your safety at all times.
