How Psychology Supervisor Training Australia Is Helpful

By Kathleen Hill

In every career, people need to be supervised in order to learn, grow and corrected where they are wrong. Training a psychologist might seem like a walk in the park at which it is not. Supervising this area actually requires a special skill set in order to work. The methods used to determine the kind of practitioners the trainees turn into. The article elaborates further on psychology supervisor training Australia.

The trainees will be nervous enough while reporting. The supervisor should take it upon themselves to make the trainees feel comfortable. They should warm up to the learners and become friendly. This will actually go a long way in making things easier during the training period. If there is always tension between them the relationship is sure not to work.

The importance of being there for the trainee is to ensure they do not feel under appreciated. Before they start meeting their clients, trainees should hold one on one meetings with their supervisors. This enables the supervisors to evaluate the skills of the trainee and give the required guidance to the learner. It is at these time that expectations from both sides are made known.

The things you teach in theory should also be applicable in real life. Most trainers tend to refer to all the theoretical aspects of their training. At that, the training should be a two-way street. The supervisor should not be all controlling and continuously feeding information to the trainees. At the end of every session trying to find out how effective you were and how you are progressing.

Another thing that should always be at the back of your mind is that a trainee has three major stages of development. In the first one, they are usually anxious and have not dealt with a client, and they, therefore, require your constant attention. The second one is when they have gained confidence and are able to concentrate on the client. The last stage is where they are empathetic and can help clients find solutions to problems.

After every session or interaction with clients, a supervisor should give feedback to the trainees. The feedback is not always based on how they work and how they relate to other people. Sometimes the feedback is based on professionalism and personality. This may be a bit difficult for the supervisor to deliver delicately depending on their relationship with the trainee.

You should find the best way on how to deliver the feedback. Seeing as it is a difficult task, it should not be done via email or other electronic means. A one on one would be the best for such a situation. Also, ensure that you have a video or audio file to help you in presenting the feedback. Having these will help you point out and correct mistakes as needed.

As much as you cannot always agree on everything does not mean you are a mismatch. As a trainer and supervisor, you just need to find common ground to work with to avoid having a difficult time at the time of training periods.
