Skills Required In Making Medical Transcription Reports

By Maria Howard

The process of changing voice-recorded reports by medical providers into the text form that can be understood by patients is referred to as medical transcription. The notes and procedures given by the doctors are organized and corrected electronically to show the past medication of a person. It is done by remedial translators employed by the specific doctor or hospital. The reports differ according to the field of the doctor and the specific patient. Here is the necessary expertise in making medical transcription reports.

To begin with, one is expected to have adequate knowledge of technical and less technical remedial words. The department of medicine has a lot of complicated words that the layman may not understand; thus, the transcriptionists should be conversant with these words. With this, the medical data will be properly recorded and detailed, and the patients will be given the required treatment.

It is important to possess adequate knowledge on structure and composition of the human body. One should know how each part of the body works. It is also necessary to know the technical names given to these parts as the doctor will always use these terminologies in their reports. It will also be crucial in understanding the past records of a patient.

Also, there is the need for proper communication and spelling skills. It is necessary because lately, health providers use speech recognition software; thus the translator ought to be audible and fluent enough as wrong speech can lead to a bad report. Translators should have perfect spelling skills to write the correct things as missing even one letter can mess up the whole report. They should also have great memory skills to memorize what they hear from the recorded information of doctors.

It is also a requirement to know how to operate office devices like the computers. As all transcription forms are recorded by electronic means, one is required to have the know-how of operating these machines. One should know how to translate the voice notes into text form as most people prefer this. The ability to control the transcription machine and also give directives is crucial.

Moreover, skill in proper arrangement and organization of documents is essential. Data should be arranged in a specific order to avoid mixing information and giving incorrect data. They could be arranged by use of alphabetic letters or numbers as this will help in finding documents faster and in an easy way.

Also, it is necessary to be able to do many tasks at once and simultaneously. One is expected to be conscious of other activities other than remedial transcription. They are also required to be able to hear the voice notes and record them correctly. This expertise will help them produce transcripts that are detailed, help ensure that the work given is managed well, and all expected targets are met without pressure.

It is crucial to have the ability to be very alert and intent to work given. One is required to be able to do work over a long period in a focused way. This will guide the production of quality work and meet the expected time-frame of work given.
