The Use Of ELS Detector And How It Works

By Larry Baker

During the summer, you apply sunblock to your skin to avoid from getting a sunburn due to the ultraviolet rays. In photography, the ultra violet light levels needs to be reduced. In both of these, you need ultra violet filters to absorb or block UV lights. An ELS detector is used for facilitating HPLC or high performance liquid chromatography.

What concerns the people, is which among the chemicals have the filtering properties to make sure that the right chemical is use. Because of these concerns technologies that can help with ultraviolet were then created. Evaporative light scattering detector has been one of the many great inventions that is being used right now.

ELSD is a technology that is used together with chromatography to be able to see UV transparent and absorbing compounds. This technology is a bit different from other detectors that are used in chromatographic applications. For this, compounds does not need to have ionization capabilities or a specific functionality.

The advantage of using this compared to spectoscopic detectors is the fact that it could identify samples that are not found when a UV detection method is used. You can apply this for many applications since this is a universal detector used for many applications. This detector is ideal for discovering drugs, combining chemistry, and analyzing natural substances.

Effluent and nitrogen will be mixed together first, then it needs to be heated in a specific level of temperature to help the evaporation of effluent. Evaporated solvent flow must be moved to a chamber that is heated or a drift tube. The vapor here is heated to make sure solvent will really evaporate. During the process, the compounds will start to form into particles that are air born.

Dried particles are detected by laser or LED light source, this triggers fraction collection. Produced particles from the drift tube end is what will be detected. Meaning, all substance that does not evaporate when inside the drift tube are detected. Today, many have already been using this for a lot of things.

ELSD is a short term for evaporative light scattering detector and is known as the evaporative mass. Aerosol based that is suitable from detecting any nonvolatile components. When eluent elutes from the column of the HPLC, it converts into a fine spray or nebulized, then it gets heated for the evaporation of mobile phase.

High quality and durable. Find a detector that has high quality. Check the information about the detector on the item itself to know what it is made of, this tells you its quality. It should be durable enough that it does not break right away with just one fall or any other circumstances.

Of course, you need to consider the price as well. Keep in mind that price is not always the major factor to consider when choosing. You may want to save a few bucks by purchasing the one with the lowest price, but you may not want to compromise the quality and the performance because of that.
